Event Description

Prof Bernard Martin (Dean: Law Faculty) will give a lunchtime talk exploring what’s at stake when you sign a publisher’s contract.

Acceptance of papers by research journals is cause for celebration.  What happens next is critical for the future dissemination of your paper.

FACTS:

  • Signing a publisher’s contract invariably means your copyright is transferred (usually off shore)
In this way, monopoly over your work is handed to publishers
  • 55% of scholarly publishing market resides in hands of 5 mega-publishers who enjoy profits of 40%
  • No university can afford all the journals needed by researchers
Most research is supported by public funding
  • Faculty supply journals with papers and also service them by performing peer review
UWC has an open access policy
