Open for Community: Across Platform Demos and Conversations

Join the University of Derby and the University of Essex as we celebrate Open Access Week 2023!

In this talk, we are joined by Dr. Abeni Wickham, founder and CEO of SciFree, a new search tool for Open Access publishing, with the mission of working towards 100% Open Access and Open Science with/for Universities and researchers. Abeni will discuss how commercialization has almost become synonymous with predatory behaviour, particularly in relation to commercial scholarly publishing in the academy.

Abeni is an experienced scientist and mentor in Material Science/Molecular Physics and Regenerative Medicine and was previously a senior analyst/consultant for Californian-based biotech and skin care companies. Abeni successfully developed new materials for varying cornea, cardiac, skin and nerve regeneration strategies and also has colloidal chemistry experience tailored for the cosmetics industry.

Do sign up for this fascinating talk and find out more about SciFree. For more information about Open Access and Open Research, please see the University of Derby's Open Research SharePoint pages and the Library's information on Open Research at the University of Essex.

Catalyzing Open Science: Charting the Path Forward at Concordia University

Open science—and the broader open scholarship movement—is reshaping the landscape of research by democratizing access to knowledge and bringing inclusion and transparency to the forefront. While endorsing the concept of open science is straightforward in principle, translating it into action poses great challenges because it requires that researchers implement several practices in their workflows. These practices include open access, open educational resources, open data, open labs, open peer review, open-source software, and citizen science. While open science implementation once depended on scholars voluntarily incorporating some of these practices into their research, it is now unmistakably becoming a priority in both Québec and the rest of Canada. This shift is substantiated by new policies and mandates currently being enacted by federal and provincial funding agencies. The Concordia Open Science Working Group (COSWG) invites you to join us in charting the path forward for the implementation of open science at Concordia University. Led by Nicolás Alessandroni and Krista Byers-Heinlein, COSWG consists of 20+ professors, librarians, post-doctoral fellows, and graduate students from across different academic units and departments. COSWG recently published a report outlining a series of practical recommendations for fostering Open Science at Concordia University—now openly available on Concordia University’s institutional repository, Spectrum.

“Peer Community In” is the future of science: Empowering authors and community with moving to diamond open access and community initiatives

Peer Community In (PCI) is a disruptive revolution in science that is changing the publication landscape and shifting power from publishers to authors. PCI is a scholar-led non-profit association that creates communities of researchers who conduct peer-reviews on and recommend preprints in their scientific fields. It is supported by over 100 public research institutions and libraries from around the world with a sustainable long-term budget.

Dr. Gilad Feldman will discuss the growing challenges with the current science publication system, briefly introduce Peer Community In, Peer Community Journal, and Peer Community in Registered Reports and the hope that they represent, and share his HKU CORE team experience with PCIRR, with concrete examples showing how this new model is beneficial to both authors, universities, the academic community, and the general public.

All researchers, students, and academic community members in Hong Kong and worldwide who are interested in OA are welcome.

Jülich Open Science Speaker Series – Open science saves lives – Lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic

Over the last decade, open science principles have been successfully advocated and have been slowly adopted in different research communities. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, many publishers and researchers have sped up their adoption of open science practices, sometimes embracing them fully and sometimes partially or in a sub-optimal manner.

In this lecture, concerns will be expressed about the violation of some of the open science principles and its potential impact on the quality of research output. Evidence will be provided of the misuses of these principles at different stages of the scientific process. A wider adoption of open science practices will be called for in the hope that this will encourage a broader endorsement of open science principles and serve as a reminder that science should always be a rigorous process, reliable and transparent, especially in the context of a pandemic where research findings were translated into practice even more rapidly.

Speaker: Dr. Lonni Besançon (Linköping University)

Jülich Open Science Speaker Series: Forschungszentrum Jülich’s Central Library (ZB) invites all scientists at Jülich, Helmholtz and our international guests to join the conversation on current developments in Open Science. Every two weeks, the series will invite a prominent member of the global community to discuss their efforts to advance the goals of open science. The series will use a hybrid format, where our speakers will be telecast to a live audience as well as via Zoom. This format was selected to minimize barriers to participation. We look forward to seeing you there!

Community over Commercialization: Why Choose to Publish Open Access

The University of Pennsylvania Press and the Penn Libraries co-host this panel discussion to provide a primer on open access. Our panel features editors, authors, and the Journals Director at Penn Press. They will talk about their experiences with open access publishing, how open access publication increases the dissemination and reach of research, and the motivations for scholars to publish in open access venues.

Panelists will address equitable access to publication in the face of language barriers or the geographical specificity of the topics of research and the ways in which open access to the scholarly record can add value to the research community and to society more broadly. The panelists will highlight how equitable open access publishing increases the impact of journals and their content, raises up diverse voices, and extends the reach of scholarship to new audiences.

Open Access Week - 23 October 2023 - Stellenbosch University Library

“Community over Commercialization” is the theme for this year’s International Open Access Week

(October 23-29). This theme encourages a candid conversation about which approaches to open scholarship prioritize the best interests of the public and the academic community—and which do not. According to UNESCO, by prioritizing the community we can prevent the “inequitable extraction of profit from publicly funded scientific activities”.

The theme can be applied to various case scenarios you might find within the research cycle process. Stellenbosch University Library will engage in an active panel discussion that will address the aspects of transformational agreements and its impact on the publisher, author, and research-intensive institution. The research community is hereby invited to join and actively participate in this discussion and find out how these agreements work within the SU research community.

Programme:

Type: Panel discussion

Place: Stellenbosch University Library, Auditorium

Date: 23 October 2023

Time: 11h00 – 12h00

Audience: in-person or online

Please register at the following link: http://library.sun.ac.za/en-za/Research/oa/week23/Pages/default.aspx

Examples of possible questions:

1. What is lost when corporations control knowledge production rather than researchers themselves?

2. What is lost when authors research output becomes just a number?

3. Considering current economic conditions, how does Stellenbosch University Library plan to continue to support the SU research community?

Should you have any questions for the panel, please send it to scholar@sun.ac.za

Please take note that the discussion will be streamed, and the recording will be available on YouTube after the event.

The LÄND goes Open GLAM: Potentials of open cultural data and digital participation

Open Access, Open Science and participation in knowledge production are central topics around democratic access to cultural heritage. However, cultural heritage institutions often reduce Open Access to the publication of objects or archival records in their own (online) catalogue. Access through e.g. connecting cultural data with other open portals or the social aspects of barrier-free and participatory knowledge access still get too little attention.

However, the digital transformation requires above all new shared forms of knowledge culture, e.g. through the principle of co-production of knowledge content. Through the cooperation of cultural heritage institutions and citizens with different backgrounds, knowledge treasures, interests and competences, knowledge can be produced and verified in a short time in multiple perspectives.

At our hybrid networking meeting, we would like to discuss the potential of open cultural data and digital participation with invited experts, Wikimedians and interested citizens, and present some projects that pursue these approaches. We would like to show the diverse possibilities of how participation, networking and FAIR data publication can complement each other and to what extent open cultural data can be used as a tool for the promotion of the arts.
