Science Day

On the 24th of November, the ISLA Research Center will celebrate “Science Day”, the world science day.

This event, which will cover an interesting set of initiatives, aims to encourage the ISLA community to participate in scientific development.

The program not only includes lectures given by invited experts, who will tell us about the pressing need to produce Science, but will also count on the effective involvement of our students.

Thus, students from our Bachelors, Masters and Postgraduate courses are invited and awarded, who, through Posters, better present their ideas, projects already completed, ongoing, or even that have not yet started.

The best works of each course will receive monetary prizes (to be deducted from tuition fees), and their authors will be invited to present their work during the event, in the ISLA Auditorium.

Let's celebrate "Science Day"!!!

A Conversation Around Climate Justice

Leddy Library invites the community to join a conversation around climate justice to celebrate International Open Access Week.

International Open Access Week is a global, community-driven week of action to open access to research. The event is celebrated by individuals, institutions, and organizations across the world.

This year’s theme focuses on climate justice and seeks to encourage connection and collaboration among the climate movement and the international open access community. The library has invited climate scholars Allison Gray and Jamey Essex to share perspectives on the topic during a one-hour lecture Friday.

“Access to knowledge is a human right, and we recognize that some populations face barriers when seeking knowledge on topic such as climate change,” said scholarly communications librarian Pascal Calarco. “Understanding the climate crisis requires the free exchange of knowledge across geographic, economic, and disciplinary boundaries and Open Access initiatives can help mitigate this issue.”

The conversation will take place Friday, Oct. 28 from 1 to 2 p.m. in the library’s Student Research Collaboratory and will also be offered online for folks to join in around the world.

The Leddy Library supports numerous open access initiatives to make resources more accessible to readers such as hosting of scholarly journals, including openly licensed ones, and providing software, support for academic journals, monographs, and conferences.

The Leddy Library invites clients to learn more by exploring its Open Access Climate Justice research guide and attending the free Open Access Week lecture, “A Conversation Around Climate Justice”.

Digitization of Written Heritage Assets

For more than 15 years, the Hamburg State and University Library (SUB) has been digitizing historical collections. By now, more than 50,000 objects have been made available online – e.g. including many special collection, such as music autographs, maps, bequests, photographs, graphics, and handwritten objects. Since 2018, this infrastructure is also used to digitize the collections of other cultural institutions, such as museums or special libraries, in Hamburg. To support research and teaching, the digitized objects are made available under open licenses from Creative Commons. In this coffee lecture, the working unit for Digitization offers you insights in the services and research options. For three million of the five million objects, a full text search is available.

The Rise of the Data Stewards

It is our great pleasure to end Open Access Week 2022 with a session dedicated to research data and its FAIRly new superheroes: the data stewards and their role as experts in data handling throughout all phases of the data life cycle.

In this session we will look at the data steward from a few different angles:

Live Håndlykken Kvale will give a short presentation of the project “Competence framework for research data support” (Kompetanserammeverk for forskningsdatastøtte) a project that aims to map what skills are needed to meet the needs of data stewards.
Nils Pharo will give us his thoughts on a possible data steward study program at the OsloMET library and information studies
Tereza Kalova from the University of Vienna will talk about engaging on their data support program and overall research data management strategy
Korbinian Bösl from BioMedData will present their experiences with and their plans for a data steward education and certification
Data managers from Utrecht University will give two presentations: One about their research data service, and the other about their YOUth data collection program
Each presentation will last for about 10 minutes and the session ends with a plenary discussion about the role of the data steward.

Open Science and Open Data in biomedical research / Scienza Aperta e Dati Aperti nella ricerca biomedica

During the International Open Access Week 2022, the Faculty of Law of the University of Trento, within the framework of the university's strategic plan and in collaboration with the Italian Association for the Promotion of Open Science (AISA), organises an international conference dedicated to the study of the openness of scientific research data with reference to biomedical data in the university environment. Biomedical scientific research data are subject to two opposing forces: private appropriation on the one hand, and openness (Open Science) on the other. The national and supranational legal framework on scientific research data is fragmented and rapidly changing. The legal areas affecting the scientific research data regime are many and include intellectual property, privacy and personal data protection, openness of data in the public sector, and contract law. The presentations of the speakers aim to outline the formal regulatory framework, but also to explore the informal practices and norms of scientific communities, with a focus on some regulatory models of openness of biomedical data, and thus to suggest the direction where the management of university biomedical research data will develop.
