Open Scholarship Café: Open Science Practices for Early Career Researchers - How can they help me?

Open Scholarship Café: Open Science Practices for Early Career Researchers - How can they help me?

Open Science (sometimes called Open Research or Open Scholarship) is about making scientific research and data available to people at all levels of society. Many early career researchers (ECRs) might want to make the outputs of their research more openly available, but are unsure of where to start. In addition, ECRs may face additional barriers such as limited access to Open Science training opportunities and resources.

The purpose of this seminar is:

  • To provide ECRs with an introduction to Open Science practices

  • To demonstrate how ECRs can start embedding open science practices into their research straight away

  • To showcase the value of engaging with Open Science for professional development.

We will hear from Hardy Schwamm, Open Scholarship Librarian at University of Galway, and Rory Coyne, a PhD student in the School of Psychology, who will offer some personal reflection on how incorporating Open Science practices into his research has advanced his career progression and development as an ECR.

Catalyzing Open Science: Charting the Path Forward at Concordia University

Open science—and the broader open scholarship movement—is reshaping the landscape of research by democratizing access to knowledge and bringing inclusion and transparency to the forefront. While endorsing the concept of open science is straightforward in principle, translating it into action poses great challenges because it requires that researchers implement several practices in their workflows. These practices include open access, open educational resources, open data, open labs, open peer review, open-source software, and citizen science. While open science implementation once depended on scholars voluntarily incorporating some of these practices into their research, it is now unmistakably becoming a priority in both Québec and the rest of Canada. This shift is substantiated by new policies and mandates currently being enacted by federal and provincial funding agencies. The Concordia Open Science Working Group (COSWG) invites you to join us in charting the path forward for the implementation of open science at Concordia University. Led by Nicolás Alessandroni and Krista Byers-Heinlein, COSWG consists of 20+ professors, librarians, post-doctoral fellows, and graduate students from across different academic units and departments. COSWG recently published a report outlining a series of practical recommendations for fostering Open Science at Concordia University—now openly available on Concordia University’s institutional repository, Spectrum.

Imaging Neuroscience & community over commercialization: An OA week panel

Join MIT Libraries and the MIT Press for an online panel with the editor of Imaging Neuroscience, a new open access journal that launched after editorial teams from two Elsevier journals left the publisher over disputes around the high cost for authors.

We’ll explore some of the benefits and challenges of moving a journal from a large, commercial publisher to a non-profit university press, and how the new journal better prioritizes the interests of this community.

The webinar is part of MIT's celebration of Open Access Week, whose theme this year asks us to think about what's lost when a shrinking number of corporations control knowledge production rather than researchers themselves.

Open Access Week 2023 - Open Science for Enabling Reproducible, Ethical and Community-driven Research

Join the University of Derby and the University of Essex as we celebrate Open Access Week 2023!

In this talk, we are joined by Dr. Malvika Sharan, senior researcher and co-lead of The Turing Way project at The Alan Turing Institute. Malvika will discuss Open Science as a framework to ensure that all research components can be easily accessed, openly examined and built upon by others. She will introduce The Turing Way - an open source, open collaboration and community-driven guide to reproducible, ethical and inclusive data science and research. Drawing insights from the project, Malvika will share best practices that researchers should integrate to ensure the highest reproducible and ethical standards from the start of their projects so that their research work is easy to reuse and reproduce at all stages of the development. All attendees will leave the talk understanding the many dimensions of openness and how they can participate in an inclusive, kind and inspiring open-source ecosystem as they collaboratively seek to improve research culture. All questions and contributions are welcome at the GitHub repository: https://github.com/alan-turing-institute/the-turing-way.

As researchers, we make complex choices around project design and decisions throughout the lifecycle of our research. We are expected to ensure that our research objects are easily accessed, openly examined and built upon by others in future work. Although open and transparent reporting helps to make sure that scientific work can be trusted, we must also integrate considerations of the societal and ethical implications of our work. Especially when these considerations impact people's lives. Furthermore, reproducibility alongside Open Research practices are important for enabling independent verification of research methods, underlying data, analysis code and workflows. All these require an understanding of research best practices and skills that are often not widely taught or explored among academic researchers.

Presenter Biography

Malvika Sharan is a senior researcher and co-lead of The Turing Way project at The Alan Turing Institute which is an open-source community and guide for reproducible and collaborative data science. She involves and supports a diverse community of contributors - helping them adopt best practices in their research and collaborate within The Turing Way. She is a co-founder of Open Life Science, a mentoring and training programme that empowers researchers to integrate open science in the context of their communities. She is a Software Sustainability Institute fellow, a Society of RSE trustee, and an active contributor to open-source community initiatives including Code for Science and Society, NASA-TOPS, The Carpentries and MetaDocencia. She works towards enabling collaborative development approaches, embedding inclusive practices and supporting projects to enhance the diversity of marginalised members in research leadership.

Do sign up for this fascinating talk and to find out more about The Turing Way! For more information about Open Access and Open Research, please see the University of Derby's Open Research SharePoint pages and the Library's information on Open Research at the University of Essex.
